Slumdog Millionaire- Summary
18-year- old Jamal Malik who is just about to win 20 Mio Rupees in India on „Who wants to be a millionaire“ is accused of cheating when he wins 10 Mio Rupees. Jamal Malik is a former streetchild from the Slums. Now he is working as a „chaiwahlah“ which is a tea server at a call center. So when Jamal reaches the final question the TV Show is sceduled to the next day and Jamal gets arrested.
Because it is so unlikely that he knows the answers or that he is THAT lucky the police decides to turture him so he would tell them how he managed to cheat.
But Jamal has for almost every question a life experience that enabled him to anser it.

In Jamals flashback the children are discovered by Maman, who is a gangster who collects street children and train them to beg for money.
One day Maman wants Salim, who is Jamals older brother to bring Jamal so he can blind him which would improve his income potential as a singing beggar). Salim tries to protect his brother and Jamal, Salim and Latika, who is their friend, try to escape. Catching up a train which is departing Salim leaves Latika on purpose because he is jelous. So Latika is cought by the gangsters again.

The brothers make their living by travelling on top of trains, selling goods, picking pockets and cheating touirists at the Taj Mahal. But eventually Jamal insists on returning to Mumbai because he wants to find Latica, which annoys Salim. Discovering that she had been raised to be a prostitute they find her. When the brothers attept to rescue her Maman appears and Salim has to shoot him. Then Salim claims Latika for himself . Trying to save Jamals life, who attacks Salim, Latika sacrifices herself. So Jamal is left on his own.

Years later Salim becomes a chaiwallah at a call center. When he has to cover for a co-worker he searches the database for Salim and Latika and gets in touch with Salim, who has become a important member of Javids organisation. Javed is a crime lord himself. By following Salim to Javeds house Jamal finds Latika and bluffes his way in pretending to be a dishwasher. Jamal finds out that Latika is with Javed and tries to persuade her to leave. Latika wants him to forget about her, but Jamal tells her that he will wait at the train station everyday at 5 p.m. until she comes.
Latika really appeares at the train station and Jamal runs to her, but she is kept by Salim and Javed’s men before he can reach her.

The next thing he does is to go to the popular show „Who wants to be a millionaire“ because he knows wherever Latika is she will be watching him.
When he reaches the final question the host of the show calls the police and Jamal is taken into police custody, where he is turtured because the police wants to know how a „slumdog“ could know the answeres to so many questions. After Jamal explained a life experience for every question the police inspector realizes that he isn’t for the money and lets him go.

Giving Latika his phone and keys to his car, Salim urges her to run away and to forgive him for what he had done.
When Jamal uses his Phone-A-Friend lifline to call Salim, because he doesn’t know the name of the thrid musketeer, Latika answeres and tells him that she’s safe, but she doesn’t know the answer to the last question. So Jamal guesses the correct answer (Aramis) and wins the grand prize. At the same time Salim is discovered to have helped Latika to escape and they shoot him.
The movie ends with a kiss at the railway satation.

India’s reaction to „Slumdog Millionaire“

Indias Reaction to Slumdog Millionaire was very positive. Especially poor people, who live in Slums themselves where very happy that this movie had secured international sucess.
While many commentators argued that this film wouldn’t be good for Indias image and some social activist protested against the residents of poor neighbourhoods being referred to as „slubdogs“ many poor people in India were very proud that this film won 8 oscars. They think that the film shows the reality and it is different from other films, which show a different Delhi and a different India.

Rich tourists slum it to see the dark side of film life.

After the release of „Slumdog Millionaire“ India became one of the season’s hippest holiday destination. So Mumbai’s so called „slum tourism“ industry, which promises outsiders a glimpse of life inside the city’s shantytowns is flourishing. People want to see realitys behind „Slumdog Millionaire“. Ganesh Tikonkar who is a guide for Reality Tours says that he takes about 50 people a day through Dharavi, Asias biggest slum. His clients spend three hours following him through the slums, passing through the factories that recycle Mumbai’s waste, leather tanneries that supply the likes of Gucci and one oft he bigget poppadum-making operations on the sub-continent.
Bill Alves from Seattle, who went on a slum tour explains that the movie is a fairytale and that his trip shows that things were a little darker and grittier in reality.

Slumdog child stars given free homes

Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail and RUBINA Ali Qurashi who play the lead characters in their younger years currently live in shacks in the Garib Nagar slum in Mumbai. But the chairman oft he Maharastra housing authority told the Times of India that they felt since this children made the nation proud, they should be given free houses. Although trust funds were set up for their future and they were sent to school Danny Boyle, director of „Slumdog Millionaire“ had been accused of having exploited the young actors.
Azharrudin’s father told the newspaper that they had barely got any money from the film-makers and whatever came in has already been spent.

welchen Rest? oO da steht doch eh schon alles oder? xD

hab halt noch das geschrieben:

What does it need to be a star?
For many fans, stars embody desires about everything from beauty and wealth to masculinity and femininity.
A star’s presence transcends the performance, a star doesn’t just make her character believable, a star also possesses a publicly acknowledged magnetism that lures audiences to films and lingers in viewers’ memories after they leave the theatre.
A star has to have “it”.
“It” is a purely virile quality belonging to a strong character. The possessor of “It” must be entirely unself-conscious and full of self-confidence. There must be physical attraction but beauty is unnecessary.
