Hat denn jemand was davon?

Famous Women:
Maria Theresa:
She succeeded her father, Charles VI., in 1740 although her claim to the throne was challenged and she became heavily involved in two wars. At first she was involved in the Austrian Succession 1740-48, then in the Seven Years’ War 1756-63. The rest of her reign was peaceful and she introduced many social reforms.
She reformed education, made some primary education compulsory, modernised higher education and gave money to universities. She organised the laws into a system and abolished torture.
Marie Curie:
She is famous for discovering the radioactive elements polonium and radium. Born in Poland in 1867 she studied in Paris and married Pierre Curie in 1895. In 1906 she succeeded her husband as professor of physics at the Sorbonne; she was the first woman to teach there.
She and her husband were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics 1903.
Marie Curie wrote about radioactivity in 1910 and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1911.
During World War I Curie helped to equip ambulances with X-ray equipment, which she drove to the front lines.
The Curies took no precautions against radioactivity and Marie died in 1934 of radiation poisoning. Even today her notebooks are still contaminated.
Eva Peron:
She started life as a poor girl from the provinces of Argentina. She moved to the capital, Buenos Aires, and met Colonel Juan Peron there. He became president and she became a powerful leader by his side, becoming the first “Presidenta”.
Eva legalized divorce, won women the vote and brought reform to the workers and the poor. She was loved by the ordinary people and when she died at the age of 33, there was much grieving for her.
Queen Elizabeth I:
She was the daughter of Henry the Eight, who founded the Anglican Church because the pope did not allow him to get divorced, and Anne Boleyn. She became Queen when Mary, her Catholic half-sister, died in 1558. Elizabeth was a women with many talents and a keen intelligence. She spoke many languages, was an expert horsewoman and also wrote poetry. Much of her reign was spent at war with Spain, but an attempt by Philip of Spain to invade England in 1588 failed. During her reign England’s power grew and the newly discovered lands of America became part of her domain. She had many suitors but never married.
Florence Nightingale:
She is known for her nursing in the Crimean War and indeed she was the founder of the nursing profession we know today. She helped reform the British army, and advised the government on military and diplomatic matters. She also helped to found the Red Cross movement.
Shirin Ebadi:
She is a lawyer, writer, activist and winner of the 2003 Nobel Prize for Peace. She first came to fame in her native Iran when she became the first female judge, although she was forced to resign after the Islamic revolution in 1979.
Since then she has been involved in promoting the rights of women and children in the country, even though at times it has brought her into conflict with the authorities and put her life in danger.
Lady Diana:
Diana, Princess of Wales, was the first wife of Charles, Prince of Wales. Together they have two sons, Price William and Prince Harry, who are second and third in line to the throne of the United Kingdom.
Prince Charles proposed on February the 6th 1981 and Diana accepted, but they kept their plans a secret.
The engagement became official an February the 24th 1981 and they married in St Pauls Cathedral on July the 29th 1981.
In the early 1990’s the marriage of Diana and Charles fell apart and Charles resumed his old affair with Camilla Parker-Bowles.
The divorce was finalised on 28 August 1996.
Because of all the trouble with the divorce and the fights between her and her former husband Diana became bulimic and anorexic and often was depressed.
After her divorce Diana she began her affair with Dodi Al-Fayed and became very well nown for her support of several charity projects. For example the International Campaign to Ban Landmines which was a campaign to rid the world from land mines.
Also Diana was one of the first celebrities to be photographed touching a person infected with HIV at the “chain of hope” organisation. She wanted to change the public opinion of AIDS sufferers.
On August the 31 1997 Diana died after a car crash in paris together with Dodi Al-Fayed and the driver of their car and the security manager of their hotel. The crash was caused by the driver who lost control of the car at high speed while he was drunk. But the paparazzi who chased them could also be blamed.
Diana was loved by people all over the world and her death caused a lot of grieving.
