Civil Rights Movement
Rosa Parks:
On December the 1st 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama, African American women Rosa Parks, refused to give up her seat to make room for a white passenger.
Her actions in civil disobedience sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott whitch turned Parlks into an international icon of resistance to racial segregation.
Because of her action the Montgomery Improvement Association (MIA) was formed an December the 5th 1955.
As their leader they elected a mostly unknown minister of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
(In the time of segregation the black people had to sit behind the 10 seats that were reserved for only white people.
But the busdrivers had adopted the practice of requiring black riders to move whenever there were no white only seats left. So he wanted Rosa Parks to giver her seat to a white passenger, but she refused, and so she got arrested.
On Sunday the 4th December 1955 plans for the Montgomery Bus Boycott were announced. Their goals were that black drivers should be hired and that the seats were handled on a first-come basis. The bus boycott lasted 381 days.
For days later Parks was found guilty and fined 10$ and 4$ for court costs, witch was an amount of money at that time, especially for a black women.
Because of her actions Rosa Parks became known as the Mother of the Modern-Day Civil Rights Movement)
Martin Luther King:
He was born on January 15th, 1929 and assassinated on April 4th 1968.
Martin Luther King was elected as the leader of the Montgomery Improvement Association in 1955 and soon became the icon of the Civil Rights Movement.
M.L.King was inspired by the non-violent activism of Ghandi and visited him in 1959 which deepened his understanding of non-violent resistance. Ghandi soon became one of King’s role models and he adopted his way of peaceful resistance.
The Montgomery Bus Boycott marks a breakthrough in the CRM. African Americans used the buses more frequently than the white people and so it was an economic hit in the face when the Boycott started.
At the age of 35 he was awarded with the Nobel Peace Prize and he was elected as Man of the Year in 1963.
He got arrested several times accused of breaking the law and of violence.
1963 he arranged the March on Washington to support the CRM and held his famous “I have a dream” – Speech in front of the Lincoln memorial who was the president who abolished slavery 100 years ago.)
“I hold this truth to be self evident that all men are created equal” is one famous line from the declaration of independence from 1775.
MLK was an opponent of the Vietnam War and wanted the government to bring the troops home.
MLK was shot in Memphis Tennessee in a hotel room, which is now a museum, after receiving lots of death threats before.
Barack Obama:
He was born an August 4th, 1961 and is the first African American President of the United States. Before that he was junior United States Senator from Illinois.
He graduated from Columbia University and Harvard Law School and worked as a community organizer and practiced as a civil rights attorney before serving in the Illinois Senate from 1997 to 2004.
He taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School from 1992 to 2004.
Following an unsuccessful bid for a seat in the US House of Representatives in 200, he announced his campaign for the US Senate in January 2003.
He was elected to the Senate in November 2004 with 70% of the vote.
As a member of the Democratic minority, he helped create legislation to control conventional weapons and to promote greater public accountability in the use of federal funds.
He also made official trips to Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
After announcing his presidential campaign in February 2007, Obama emphasized (unterstreichen, hervorheben) withdrawing American troops from Iraq, energy independence, decreasing the influence of lobbyists and promoting universal health care as top national priorities.
Obama was endorsed by Senator Kennedy who believes that Obama is a worthy heir to his assassinated brother J.F.Kennedy.
