How to create a star?
The basic ingredient you need to become a star is talent. Having no talent there’s chance you’ll become a star. However, there are lots of people with a special talent for acting or singing who will never become a star. This is because talent is not enough. To become a star you need a certain something which makes you stand out of the crowd. These indefinable quality which makes you unique is called the “it” factor. Well, the “it” factor is not always a natural quality but Hollywood has become very good at manufacturing this factor. Nowadays a star persona is created by their agents. These agents, the studios and the actors themselves work hard on cultivating their star persona. Furthermore it is necessary to create a suitable image for his star persona. You create an image by making your star appear in certain films and also the off-screen publicity is important. After having created a certain image it is essential that the stars always stick to their role. They have to behave according to their image and keep appearing in films that fit to their role (“play safe”).
For example there is Jody Foster who played the FBI agent in Silence of the Lambs and then continued to play the role of a tough woman in other films.
However, there are also areas that are outside the star’s control. For example the paparazzi who can make or break a star depending on what stories they report on. Also film critics have a great influence on a star’s success. But what matters the most is the fans.
Hugh Grant was seen in his car with a prostitute, which caused a real scandal. Hugh Grant then appeared on a chat show and confessed to it. This is why the public forgave him. The fact that in his films he always played a womanizer was helpful too.

The Oscars
The Oscars are actually Academy Awards. They are invented in the 1920’s in order to reward the previous year’s greatest cinema achievements. Each year in February there is the Oscar show. Therefore hundreds of movie lowers tune in to watch the glamorous ceremony and learn who will receive the highest honors in filmmaking.
To find out who the Oscar should be given to 6000 member of the Academy secretly cote which film was going to win the Oscar. Awards are presented for outstanding individual or collective efforts in up to 25 categories. There are five nominees in each category.
Only three times in its almost 80-Year history the Academy Awards failed to take place. The first time it was because of a massive flooding in L.A. The ceremony was delayed by a week.
The second time it was postponed from April 8 to April 10 out of respect for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who had been assassinated a few day earlier and whose funeral was held on April 9.
The third time the show was postponed for 24 hours because of the assassination attempted on President Ronald Reagan.
